it’s finally happening

A little over a year ago when we were on our house hunting trip to buy our FIRST house, we found one that met most of the qualifications on our list.  Four bedrooms?  Check.  At least two bathrooms?  Check.  Good-sized flat yard?  Check.  Short commute to Patrick’s work?  Check.  Within our budget?  Check.  It was essentially move-in ready and just needed a few cosmetic changes to suit our taste.  After weighing pros and cons and comparing it to the other houses on our list, we finally decided that it was the place for us and signed our life away.  When we made that decision, I said to our realtor, “The first thing to go will be that awful kitchen floor!”

Now we’ve been in our house for almost three years.  In that time, we’ve painted almost every wall inside the house, had the exterior of our house painted, replaced almost every faucet and light fixture, had some recessed lighting put in, got a new dishwasher, had new kitchen countertops put in, and had all the upstairs windows replaced.  Did you notice something missing from that list?  We STILL do not have a new kitchen floor!

I have almost pulled the trigger on the project many times.  I researched all types of flooring options and thought I had my mind made up, only to second guess myself at the last minute.  It has been a tougher decision that I thought.  I’d prefer wood floors, but because the rest of our house has original hardwood floors, it would look stupid to have a different kind of wood right next to them.  I like the look of tile or stone floors, but I don’t like having such a hard surface in my kitchen that can be dangerous when children fall on them or when you accidentally drop a plate and it shatters!  I won’t bore you with all the different floors that I thought I was going to choose, but I will tell you that I finally DID decide on something and they are being installed TOMORROW!

In honor of its last night in our home, I went down and took a final picture of that wretched floor:

Okay, I know what you’re thinking.  “They don’t look that bad.  Why do you hate them so much?”  Well, here’s what they look like when you take a closer look:

Yeah, they’re vinyl stick on tiles. . . that are all peeling up at the corners.  Lovely.  They never look clean.  Even after you spend forever sweeping and mopping and scrubbing, they still look the same—nasty.

I guess I should be blogging about our Easter right now, but I’m just way too excited about this.  The Easter blog will have to wait. . . I hope I can fall asleep—I’m so giddy that it almost feels like I’m a kid again on Christmas Eve!

After pictures coming VERY SOON!

You're so good. I ALWAYS forget to take the before pictures. Nate took 3 days off this week and got the rest of the floors in on our main floor. He did all new trim too. It's amazing what a big change floors can make to the whole feel of your house. Can't wait to see the "after".

Yay! Getting rid of the nasty, filthy white carpet in our house (also the first thing I swore would go--and it took almost 2 years!) was pretty close to the happiest day of my life, as well. I feel your joy! Can't wait to see the upgrade!

You do have a great house, Meredith. Just looking at that picture of your kitchen reminded me of how much I like the floor plan and look of your house. It was already practically perfect in my book, and with new kitchen floors, WOW!
