ONEderful party!

We partied the day after Emery’s birthday so that Patrick would be able to join us.  I couldn’t decide what to make her cake in the shape of and finally decided that a fish would be pretty easy and hopefully would turn out decent.  Here’s what I came up with:

I used the same recipe that I’ve used for the last two first birthdays we’ve had.  I try to make it a semi-healthy cake that still tastes like a treat.  It’s a carrot cake that gets most of its sweetness from pineapple juice (but there is some sugar in it) and uses all whole wheat flour.  The older girls loved it!  Emery was eager to dig in to the cake, but because she’d just eaten a big dinner right before, she ate all the blueberry bubbles and then licked some frosting but didn’t really get into the cake part underneath.  It was definitely cute to watch her play in it, though!  (The next day I gave her a few pieces of the cake after lunch and she scarfed it!)

Then we did a few presents.  I wrapped each one very sloppily, with just one piece of tape holding each present together so that she’d be able to get the wrapping off by herself without too much trouble.  Of course, once she pulled and shook each present enough that the present came loose, she just watched it fall to the floor and continued to play with the paper!

Guess how many tries it took to get this picture with everyone looking and no one crying?

monette-- old navy, baby! i've gotten our swimsuits there for the last 4 years and they always have some cute "surfer suits" as they call them. they're great cuz you don't have to slather on as much sunscreen!

Somehow I missed this post. Your cake turned out super, super cute--it does look like an artist's work. You're such a pro, Mer. How did you make the BLACK frosting?
