out with the old

Yesterday, Berkeley saw a picture of a bride, which sparked the following conversation.

B:  Do wedding dresses always have no sleeves?

me:  No.  Wedding dresses come in all types of styles.  Don’t you remember the pictures of me in my wedding dress?  My dress had sleeves.

B:  Oh, yeah.  I forgot.

me:  Actually, I still have my wedding dress.

B:  You do?  Then how come you never wear it?

me:  (laughing at the thought of me wearing my wedding dress while I went grocery shopping)  Where do you think I should wear it?

B:  Well, like to church or something.

me:  Ummmmm. . .  probably not.  A wedding dress is usually something you wear only for your wedding.

B:  Then why do you still keep it if you don’t wear it anymore?

me:  I guess just to remember that special day.

B:  So, sometimes you just take it out and look at it?

me:  Well, I don’t think I’ve ever really done that.

B:  Why not?

Good question.  Why am I keeping it?  (Maybe I should wear it to church!)  I guess there’s a lot of things like that around our house.  I haven’t looked at them in years, but can’t bear parting with them.  Please don’t report me to Hoarders*!

However, I have a whole slew of things that I am parting with this week.  The past few days, my time has been consumed by preparing to consign all of my maternity clothes and the little girl clothes in sizes from newborn to 18 months that have been taking up precious storage space.  They have served us well, but now it is time to let go.  I’ve gotten a little nostalgic as I’ve pressed and tagged some of my favorite little baby dresses and onesies, but it actually feels good to  PURGE.  And now my added incentive to get rid of this stuff is so that our family room will no longer look like this:

*I can’t watch this show because it really freaks me out.  I saw the Oprah episode about it and that was almost too much for me to handle!

yay for purging. that is a great feeling!

for a joke on our tenth anniversary I put on my wedding dress a few minutes before michael got home from work. it made him laugh to walk in the door and see me making dinner in that huge white dress!

My mom has used my wedding dress for a Young Women's activity. So at least it has been looked at since I was married. You just never know when you will need it.

I may want to buy some maternity clothes! I've been buying some on ebay but I'd rather have some from you! Also, I find out what I'm having on March 29 ( 2 weeks away I know) and I may want some of your baby girl clothes too- the super cute ones of course! But if you'd rather consign them, that's cool. Let me know.

uh, moll-- you're like 4 inches taller than me and not flat-chested, so i have a feeling my maternity clothes wouldn't work for you!

i'm only consigning the spring/summer clothes at this sale, so IF you do have a girl, i'll have some fall/winter clothes that you can use!

Meredith, I think you need to put that wedding dress on again and have a little fashion show with your girls. And then post pictures on here. Berks would love that.

Good for you...getting rid of stuff is so liberating, but so hard!! At least for me.

What happened to your old coffee table/ottoman thing?

Yeah, what happened to your other coffee table. I thought it was bigger?? I hope you make loads of money on Saturday. Thanks for the call today.

I second the idea that you should put the dress on and post pics :)

just be careful! sometimes when you get rid of all your maternity/baby things it seems like that's the time for the "surprise" pregnancies. and no, I'm not speaking from experience.
