Apparently Berkeley is not the only budding artist in the family. Last week, Kendall brought home a paper from school that said that a piece of her artwork had been chosen to be in an art show that would be running all month long in one of the buildings uptown. They were having an open house this past Tuesday for all of the artists in the show, so when I saw that our calendar was clear for that night, I decided that we would go. Patrick and I made a really big deal about it with her so that she would be excited and feel proud to be in her first art show, but when he and I talked about it in private, we both had to admit that we wondered how big of a deal it really was. Let’s be honest—probably every student in the school had a piece of art in the show, right?
So, on Tuesday night, the girls and I went to the open house. Patrick was going to meet us there since his office is just a few blocks away, but unfortunately, work detained him. There were masses of people there, everyone trying to wedge themselves into this small room where there was floor to ceiling artwork.
We squeezed ourselves in there and inched our way around the room as we looked for Kendall’s masterpiece. She wasn’t exactly sure which piece of art had been chosen, but said she thought it was the picture she made of a penguin. We looked and looked, but couldn’t find her piece. Finally, we came out and I was going to find someone to ask to see if there happened to be another room that we were missing, when all of a sudden, I saw it. Do you see the penguin in the picture above? Her picture had gotten one of the prime spots, right outside the gallery (you can see it under the chin of that woman in the white shirt on the left side of the picture). And here’s a close-up:
She was just elated when she saw it! We milled around for a little bit and then the art director for the school district stood up to say a few words. Turns out it was a good thing we came because it was in fact a BIG deal. Only one kindergartener, one first grader, and one second grader was chosen from each school in the school district to be represented at this art show. Each art teacher had the entire school year to decide which pieces would be chosen, and my little Kendall and her little penguin made the cut. That’ll teach us not to downplay her achievements ever again!
Berkeley and Emery seemed to be enjoying themselves as well:
Emery even showed us her new trick. Check it out:

Seriously, that is a fantastic piece of art work. She's a talented girl!
I agree, that was pretty impressive artwork! That would be a cool piece to have in the kids room at home. Way to go Kendall!!

Wow, Kendall takes after her mom in the artistic arena. So cool...what material did she use to create her masterpiece? I love it.
Okay, no bias, here, that is a great piece of art work. The shading of the snow was impressive not to mention that it really looked like a penguin. Let's not forget that she is only six years old AND a lefty. We are so proud of her!!!
Congratulations, Kendall! So, where do you get your artistic talent? Mom or Dad?
that is awesome what an accomplishment, glad you didn't miss it.
