a project 34 years in the making

The project started back in Montreal around the time I was born.  My mom bought three black and white ink drawings and thought that she would have them framed and hung in their house.

I was child #3, and as I can now attest to, she got busy, the drawings got packed away somewhere, and they were forgotten about. . . through three moves, the birth of five more children, all eight children moving out, lots of marriages, lots of grandchildren being born. . . you get the idea.

A couple years ago, my mom came out to Charlotte to visit us and she brought me a gift—those 3 drawings that she bought many years ago!  Since I was born in Montreal, she thought that it might be fun for me to have something from my birthplace, and since she was obviously never going to get around to having them framed, maybe I’d have better luck with that!

Well, they sat in my pile of “projects to work on” for quite a long time.  I knew they would have to be custom framed since they are an unusual size (about 15” x 32”) and since there are three of them and custom framing isn’t cheap, the project wasn’t high on my list.  Then, a couple days before Thanksgiving, I was at Michael’s getting some things for a Thanksgiving craft I wanted to do with the girls and I happened to see a frame that I thought just might work!  It had a very long skinny opening that was sectioned off for four smaller pictures, but if I took that frame out, it just might work!

The drawings already had their own light gray mats, so I took out the frame and realized I just had to trim a couple inches off the top and bottom of the mats for them to fit perfectly in the frames!

Of course, once they were framed, they sat in my living room, waiting for Patrick to have the time to help me hang them.  We finally put them up last week and I think they look MUCH better than the blank wall that was above that couch before!  Thanks, Mom!

Those are great! I have a few things that are just sitting around waiting for their custom framing to happen too. I hope it doesn't take me until my children all have a few kids! That's really great that you found some frames that work so well with them.

Yea! Those look so chic in black frames above your red couch -- nice!! I'll start holding my breath for mom to bring me cool pics from College Station, TX to frame . . . ('Course I don't think you could make College Station look cool if you tried . . . :-) Loved all the Christmas pics, too! :-)

Those are very nice- so classy looking. And meaningful, too! Way to go on getting it done. I have yet to hang anything on several of my walls...

Those look great! And it's such a great feeling to check something off the to do list. I still have a few pictures I haven't hung up and we've lived here 2.5 years already!
